Energy Savings and Cost Reduction

Table of Contents

Energy savings and reduced costs are always at the forefront for any business and homeowner. By making small changes to your day to day life, a business can reduce their carbon footprint while saving some money in the future.

But where to begin?

A great place to start for energy savings and cost reduction is upgrading your current lighting to LED (light-emitting diode) lighting. LED lighting reduces the amount of electricity that is being used in your home or business, which then saves money in the long run. Compared to a standard incandescent light bulb, LED’sUse up to 75% less energyLast up to 10X longer and are cool to the touch. LED’s require less upkeep, which means they do not need to be switched or replaced as often, consequently requiring less maintenance.

LED lighting is also better for the environment. Compared to other lighting, LEDs are designed to minimize vibrations and noise, which reduces noise pollution in the environment. They are also made mercury free which means there is minimal chemical pollution to the environment. LEDs are made of a tough plastic, which also aids in LEDs producing less heat and more light! Plus, LEDs allow for better control of your lighting in your business and home. They create truer colours which allows you to set an ambiance for each room.

LEDs can be paired with dimmers which can be programmed to turn lights on and off at specific times.  Though the original upgrade and installation require an investment, you will see a return in the future. BC Hydro is currently offering rebates for lighting upgrades (among other projects). TDR will assist with all paperwork to submit to B.C. Hydro Here are a few small changes you can do to save.

More details can be found on the B.C. Hydro website. Not ready to go ahead with the upgrade? No problem! Below are a few things that you can do around the house.

1.       Turn off lights in rooms not being used – or installing dimmers / automated switches
2.       Use natural lighting – better for your health anyway
3.       Use cold water for laundry
4.       Unplug unused electronics – less standby power
5.       Manage your thermostat – lowering your thermostat by 2 degrees can provide savings
6.       Tossing a towel in the dryer – reduces drying time If you have already upgraded to LED lighting,
the next phase would be upgrading your outdoor lighting or adding motion detectors in areas that
are not regularly used to minimize lighting usage.
